A global conference in Uganda set to explore issues of children deprived of their liberty within the justice systems in Africa
7 NOVEMBER 2011 ADDIS ABABA : Together, the African Child Policy Forum (ACPF), a leading advocate on policy and dialogue on children in Africa, and Defence for Children International (DCI), a non- governmental organisation that promotes and protects children’s rights on a global, regional and local level, hosted a major international conference on child justice in Kampala, Uganda on 7-8 November 2011.
Over 300 delegates from all over the African continent and the wider world attended the “Deprivation of Children’s Liberty as a Last Resort”, which was held at the Speke Resort and Conference Centre in Kampala, Uganda.

Violet Odala is the Senior Programme Coordinator for the Child and the Law Programme at the African Child Policy Forum. Under this programme, Violet develops and manages projects related to legislative and policy developments on children in Africa. The projects include, Harmonisation of Laws on Children in Africa, Child Law Resources Guide, Children’s Rights in the Justice System, and Extending Legal Protection to Children in Africa.
Violet is the 2011 winner of the international Human Rights Essay Award from the Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (American University). She holds a BA and an LLB from the University of the Witwatersrand (R.S.A), LLM in Human Rights from the University of Nottingham (U.K.), LLM from the University of Minnesota (U.S.A.), and she is currently also pursuing a Doctorate in Law, at the University of Pretoria, researching on Child Justice Law in Malawi.
